"THE U.S. ALBUM"
Pink Lady’s first and only album released in the U.S. was, in my opinion, a classic example of Disco music at it’s best, even though the genre was on it’s last legs when it came out in the latter half of 1979. The album gets off to a rollicking start with “Kiss in the Dark”, PL’s top 40 tune which was a fast paced, foot tapping number that I just loved when I heard it for the very first time and, as I’ve said more times than I can count, could’ve gone higher on the charts if it had come out six months sooner than it had. Next up is “Dancing in the Halls of Love” that had great beat where you could imagine getting down at Studio 54. “Show Me The Way To Love” was a sweet and charming slow jam about learning how to love, about how to touch and kiss. “Walk Away Renee”, the b-side to KITD, originally done in the 60’s by Left Banke was a nicely done cover by the Ladies while “Strangers When We Kiss” was, in my estimation, more pop than Disco, but was nice nevertheless. “Love Me Tonight” had a slick, Latin sound that I found rather enjoyable, “I Want To Give You My Everything” was a stirring and powerful ballad that tugged at the heartstrings, ditto for “Deeply”, both representing a nice and delightful change of pace from the album’s Disco theme. “Give Me Your Love”, another ballad was a lovely song with stirring vocals from Mie and Kei, and we close out with “Love Countdown” which was as Disco as Disco gets and was was my second favorite track on the album after KITD. Overall, I was pleased with how well Mie and Kei sang in English, but I wasn’t surprised since I’ve heard them sing in my tongue many times before in live performances (i.e., the Las Vegas concert) their harmonies were just as wonderful as in Japanese, and while the album didn’t make any noise on the Billboard charts, it was still very much a treat to listen to, even after all these years.
