"WE ARE SEXY"

My knowledge of Pink Lady record and album releases after I left Japan in early December 1978 was nonexistent, and that’s being kind as I didn’t learn about anything from 1979 on (save for the U.S. Album) until 1996. So, when I learned about the album “We Are Sexy”, I had been under the impression this was another American release, it wasn’t, of course, but it was still a nice album. Just like the U.S. Album, this platter was Disco all the way, even moreso than their lone stateside release, beginning with a two song medley, “McArthur Park” and “Heaven Knows”, songs made popular by Richard Harris (Dumbledore from Harry Potter) and the Queen Of Disco herself, Donna Summer, a medley Mie and Kei handled in English which I thought they handled well. Next up was Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” (a song his fans were said not to have liked because it was Disco) which the Ladies sang in their native Japanese, this was followed by a different version of Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renee”, a song I’ve come to appreciate more with time.

Next was a Japanese version of “I Was Made For Dancin’”, a song made famous by late 70’s teen heartthrob Leif Garrett who, as we all know, had Pink Lady as guest stars on his 1979 TV special, “Star Love”, originally done by Cheryl Lynn was next as the Ladies sang again in English. Next came a whopping four song all English medley featuring “Knock On Wood” (Amii Stewart), “Boogie Wonderland” (Earth, Wind & Fire), “Hot Stuff” (Donna Summer) and “Go West” (Village People), a Disco fest of delightful proportions which I enjoyed, speaking the genre, “Kiss in the Dark” was represented, but in Japanese, I found that to have been a fresh and entertaining take of PL’s Top 40 single, lastly was a third Donna Summer offering, “Last Dance”, also in Japanese and was, by the by, the song that closed out their Christmas night concert in 1978. All told, this was a fun album with a foot tapping beat which was what Disco was all about back in the day, and Pink Lady did the genre proud.
