PINK LADY: WE ARE SEXY

a review by Trooper Tru McCray

Ladies and Gentlemen… Pink Lady fans of all ages… it’s Review Time.

1) Medley 1 (MacArthur Park; Heaven Knows): This song had a rather mysterious intro with pianos, strings, and synthesizers. During the intro, I pictured MIE & KEI rushing into a rather empty nightclub – out of the rain. Once inside, they freshen up and change into those pink sparkly dresses (the same as those seen on the first official “Pink Lady & Jeff” episode). Then they make their way to the stage just before the 2:48 mark of the song. Although MIE & KEI were the only people in the entire building, they would sing on stage anyway. Then after singing at first verse of “MacArthur Park”, the entire room was filled with a magic light – then just like magic; dancers appeared behind them, and an applauding audience appeared in front of them! Then they go into a rather festive dance routine. Then after a while, they went into “Heaven Knows” and performed it with style and grace. Then after the first two verses and choruses, they go back into “MacArthur Park”… thus ending this first disco medley with style and grace. These are excellent covers of EWF songs.

2) Do Ya Think I’m Sexy (in Japanese): No disrespect intended, but [in my opinion] MIE & KEI made this song a lot more enjoyable! Sorry, Rod Stewart, but Pink Lady brought coolness to one of your songs!

3) Walk Away Renee: This is another cover song that Pink Lady made much more enjoyable; flourishes, choruses, and all! And to make things interesting, they ended it just like Left Banke did in the original!

4) I Was Made For Dancing (in Japanese): A very busy (but nonetheless enjoyable) disco song. And just a few seconds before the first chorus, I learned that Leif Garrett originally performed this song first! OK, that’s two men that MIE & KEI have out-performed. Way to go, Ladies!

5) Star Love: This song had a slow and beautiful start… then the music picked up after the first chorus. After the first chorus, I learned that this song was originally performed by Cheryl Lynn.

6) Medley 2: Talk about a trip down Memory Lane! The first two songs (“Knock On Wood” & “Boogie Wonderland”) were performed on the very first official episode of Pink Lady & Jeff. Then they covered Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” and Village People’s “Go West.”

7) Kiss in the Dark (in Japanese): Aside from this being one of the greatest Pink Lady songs ever, the music was slightly different as well. It is unknown if MIE & KEI performed this version live…

8) Last Dance (in Japanese): Same slow intro as that which Donna Summer gave, then the music picked up. Then MIE & KEI repeated the chorus a few times before letting the band and backup singers take over. If memory serves me right, MIE & KEI ended some of their concerts with this very song.

Well folks, there you have it. Another Pink Lady masterpiece reviewed by your friendly neighborhood Trooper Tru. I hope you enjoyed this Pink Lady experience as much as I have. Once again, I thank my fellow Chicagoan Joshua Parris for bringing Pink Lady back to my attention back in 2009, I thank Jeffrey Branch for creating the “Pink Lady America” website, and I thank Mitsuyo Nemoto & Keiko Masuda for bringing Pink Lady to this world. And most of all, I thank all of you for loving Pink Lady as much as I do. See ya next time, Think Pink, and God Bless.
